During the 24th Brazilian Steel Conference, on May 8th and 9th, in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Francisco Gaetani, the Director of Corporate Affairs of Brazil Steel Institute, Cristina Yuan showed the actions developed by the steel industry regarding the commitments made in the “Charcoal Sustainability Protocol”, one year after its launching.

Text of the Charcoal Sustainability Protocol in full

WHEREAS

People’s quality of life, now and in the future, depends on the effort of all towards sustainability;

Charcoal is a renewable resource, used as input in the metallurgic process, and constitutes an environmental differential of Brazil;

The steel production chain supports public programs and policies for sustainable forestry.

The steel industry, which operates in full legal conformity and within the strictest ethical principles in the production, procurement and consumption of charcoal, publicly announces the launch of the charcoal sustainability protocol, so as to collaborate even further with the public power for the awareness of the production chain regarding the importance of the sustainable production of such input. In this regard, the undersigned steel companies reaffirm the following commitments:

  • 1. Operate within the precepts of sustainable development and in perfect compliance with the legislation, considering environmental, social and economic aspects in an integrated and harmonic manner;

  • 2. Act with the production chain towards eliminating practices and activities that violate labor rights or cause damage to the environment;

  • 3. Maintain commercial relationships only with companies in full compliance with all legal social-environmental requirements;

  • 4. Require, as per the legislation in force, all relevant documents from producers of charcoal and derived products;

  • 5. Set up a partnership with the Public Power to develop a social and environmental awareness program for charcoal suppliers;

  • >6. Conclude within 4 years the full compliance of forestry inventories with the respective production demands by means of own plantation or outsourced plantation, provided that same comply with the legal requirements;

  • 7. Act in partnership with the Government in order to keep up the development and implementation of technology for impounding and burning of process gases from charcoal production, so as to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases;

  • 8. Present periodically the development of the actions listed above in the steel industry’s Sustainability Report.
