Steel in Everyday lives

At the Sunday lunch, on our way to work or while running household chores, steel is always present in our lives.

Introduction

At the Sunday lunch, on our way to work or while running household chores, steel is always present in our lives. Resistant, durable and 100% recyclable, steel is essential in building homes, making cars, manufacturing household appliances and consumer goods in general. It is so present in people’s lives that many times it becomes invisible. The Brazil Steel sought up-to-date data in order to determine the actual participation of steel in cars, refrigerators, stoves and civil construction, both in weight and in products’ selling prices.

The Technological Research Institute (IPT), upon request from the Brazil Steel, dismounted two cars, one stove and one refrigerator, and verified that, although steel accounts for a lot of these products’ weight, its cost for the final consumer is low. Over 50% of the weight of raw materials used in carmaking and refrigerators, for instance, comes from steel, but its share in the selling price of these goods is lower than 10%. In Civil Construction, the data refers to the study by Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV – SP), regarding December, 2009, considering average features of homes available in the metropolitan region of São Paulo.

Steel contributes a lot, but costs little.
