ArcelorMittal Brasil combines its profitability and business expansion targets with the search for ecoefficiency. For the Company, commitment to the environment is not merely complying with the sector’s legislation; it goes beyond the limits set by existing norms and regulations to ensure the balance between industrial activity and the rational use of natural resources.
The Company develops programs and actions aimed to mitigate the impact of its activities on the biodiversity surrounding its units. In this regard, it uses a number of management and operational tools as well as environmental management systems, including certification ISO 14001 at all of its industrial facilities.
The Companies comprising ArcelorMittal Brasil rationalize the use of water, with a recirculation rate of 98%. Electricity generation is also a point to be mentioned, whether through exploitation of gases from the production process or through the Companies’ own generation facilities. ArcelorMittal Aços Longos has a hydroelectric plant which partially supplies the needs of its Monlevade (MG) unit, while ArcelorMittal Tubarão has four thermoelectrical plants, making it self-sufficient regarding energy needs.
ArcelorMittal Brasil is also a benchmark in the steel sector for its management of industrial waste. The re-use of production waste exceeds 95%, far above the sector’s average of 80%. The annual output of 10 Mt of steel generates 3.7 Mt of waste and byproducts, which are recycled.
All Companies and units are certified by international norms ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS, regarding quality management, environment and occupational safety and health.
The Companies comprising ArcelorMittal Brasil have a long record of activities together with the community they are inserted in, through promotional actions or sponsorship of a wide array of projects related to the population’s quality of life. The projects are preferably aimed to education, culture, social promotion, health, environment and urban infrastructure.
In managing its social actions, ArcelorMittal Brasil uses tools to plan, develop and monitor each project. The system allows management and follow-up of all social programs developed by the controlled companies.
The social and educational projects benefit over a million people in the states of Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Bahia.
