Mission and Principles

The Brazil Steel Institute, as a class entity representing the country’s steelmakers, undertakes the principles and mission of the companies. The mission of Brazilian steelmakers is to effectively provide domestic supply of steel products, and to permanently participate in the global steel trade, contributing to the Country’s sustainable development and social welfare.

In pursuing this mission, the activities performed by the sector follow a set of principles:

Free Enterprise – Inspired by market needs and by the association between capital and work, with no discrimination;

Market Economics– The market is the best channel for the society to express its needs for goods and services, transcending the isolated wishes of individuals and institutions;

Profit and Price – Profit is the main element for generation and preservation of free enterprise and thus, for market economics. It must allow self-sustained operations and growth of companies, providing adequate remuneration to the capital invested. Prices must reflect the economic reality, regulated by supply and demand;

The Role of the Government – Provide essential public services so that free enterprise may supply the needs of the Country for goods and services;

Social Responsibility and Human Resources – Commitment to improve the quality of life in the Brazilian society supplying, through efficient, productive and market-oriented companies, opportunities for growth, generating wealth for the parties involved: employees, clients, suppliers, shareholders and communities;

International Trade – Greater integration of the Brazilian economy with international markets constitutes a tool for maintaining a competitive, efficient production structure, both through stimulating quality improvements and through the possibility of obtaining gains of scale;

Environment and Production Structure – Act in accordance with sustainable development principles and values, making rational use of natural resources and inputs and adopting economically proven and viable technologies to reduce environmental impacts;

Research and Technological Development – Support to R&D activities for domestic technologies, without impairing the access to state-of-the-art technologies developed overseas.
