The Brazil Steel Institute (IBS) – so called Instituto Brasileiro de Siderurgia, in Portuguese version - has been acting to support the development and competitiveness of the Country’s steel industry since 1963. After more than 45 years, the IBS is now adopting a new name (in Portuguese) and a new brand. Why change at this moment?

A survey carried out by the Institute showed that the general public does not make a clear association between steelmaking and the steel producing industry. The term steelmaking is applied to other segments of the economy.

Furthermore, the survey identified the need to reinforce the importance of steel on the everyday lives of the people. At work, at home, during leisure activities, at hospitals, public works… wherever you look, there are products made of steel or made by steel machines. This presence is so constant that sometimes steel becomes invisible.

However, this is the product of one of the most important industries for the development of the Brazilian economy. An industry with an increasing need to demonstrate more explicitly its commitment to the development of the country and to the demands of our society, a commitment also present in sustainability activities, based on the economic, social and environmental pillars.

The Brazilian steel industry is one the most competitive in the world. It generates an added value for the country of R$ 45 billion every year, accounting for a trade balance surplus of more than US$ 4 billion, approximately 18% of Brazil’s total. The industry currently employs 110 thousand people, prioritizing the qualification of their workforce, with constant investments in training and improvement.

Steelmakers continuously seek improvements in the ecoefficiency of their processes and products, following not only the environmental legislation, but also the best operational practices and technologies.

Within such context, the IBS has changed its name to Instituto Aço Brasil (in Portuguese version), and is adopting a new logo, keeping pace with the demands of our society regarding sustainability, strengthening the identity of the Brazilian steel industry and the importance of steel in people’s lives and in the development of the country.

The Instituto Aço Brasil / Brazil Steel Institute is born undertaking the goal of reinforcing the steel industry’s positive attributes such as soundness, efficiency, social-environmental responsibility, resistance, modernity, reliability, besides clarifying any issues perceived inaccurately. The sector is prepared to overcome challenges and to take advantage of opportunities for growth. The commitment is to Brazil.
