The best of the steel industry in the biggest investment underway in Brazil
ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico is the biggest private investment to take place in Brazil in the last ten years, with a total value of €5.2 billion. Its main shareholder, ThyssenKrupp Steel, the largest producer of steel in Germany and one of the biggest in the world, participates with 73,13% in the project, with Vale, which will be responsible for supplying the iron ore, holding the remaining 26,87%. The steel mill complex is being constructed on an area of 9 km², in the Industrial District of Santa Cruz, which forms part of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro. The project also includes the construction of a port with two terminals – one responsible for receiving 4 million tonnes of coal per year and the other for the shipment of the production of 5 million tonnes of steel slabs per year. When it is fully operational, ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico will send all its production to the external market – 60% to the United States of America and the remaining 40% to Germany – which will represent a volume sufficient to raise Brazilian exports of steel by 40%.
Job creation
During the construction phase the project created 30.000 direct jobs. A further 3,500 workers, recruited with a preference for those in the West Zone of Rio and in the municipalities neighbouring the venture, are being contracted for the operational phase of the steel mill. As regards jobs created indirectly, these figures could increase fourfold. The influence of the steel mill complex extends to the metropolitan region of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro and to the Sul Fluminense region, particularly with regard to the metal-mechanical industry. In the operational phase the employees of TKCSA will be predominantly Brazilian with the number of expatriates less than 100.
Investment in training
With the aim of guaranteeing the labour supply for the operation and maintenance of the steel mill, a partnership was signed in April 2007 with the Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro – FIRJAN – to train 1,500 workers. It is the biggest agreement ever signed by Senai-RJ with a private company, with a total value of R$10 million. The selection process gave priority to the inhabitants of the region close to the steel mill.
ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico will, furthermore, build a technical school in Itaguaí and a high school in Santa Cruz to serve nearby communities, with training focused on the principal needs of the industries of the region. The technical school will function as a centre of excellence where, in the future, Senai will be able to develop courses appropriate to the needs of local labor.
